Birgit's Food Fetish and Recipe Blog

First, these recipes are largely family recipes. I will try to attribute sources as much as possible, though some have been altered a bit from the original. Second, please excuse weird grammer and spelling. If I tried to edit everything I post, I'd never post anything. Third, some of my comments aren't for the faint of heart, since I can get kind of technical and biological about cooking and some of the ingredients. So, read at your own risk!

Oma's Bread and Butter Pickles!

Wow! I was at Dad's house and reached up to see what this one gray notebook was, and found out it was Mom's separate notes for cooking! So, for starters, and for Tara, here's Mom's Bread & Butter Pickles.

2 quarts cucumbers
4 small white onions
1 bell pepper
1/4 cup salt (!)
2 1/2 cups mild vinegar
2 1/2 cups sugar (brown or white)
1 1/2 tbsp mustard seed
1 1/2 tbsp celery seed

Wash vegetables. Slice and mix. Add salt. Let stand over night with heavy cover. Add ice to vegetables, while heating vinegar and remaining ingredients. Drain, rinse chilled vegetables, and then add to vinegar. Heat slowly (don't boil). Pour into jars and can.

At least, that's what I think she said.
